UoN suggests 'planting trees' to make up for 2020/21 students missing graduations

They say it will give them a lasting connection to Notts

In an email sent to recent graduates, UoN has proposed “planting trees” to “celebrate everyone who missed out on in-person graduation events in 2020 and 2021.”

UoN says these plans will provide students with a lasting connection to Nottingham and have a positive impact for the planet.

The uni added that these plans are not a replacement for an “in-person celebration”, which they say they are in the process of planning for 2022.

The uni proposes that they will plant “thousands of trees” in local woodlands, if the plans are approved.

They are asking graduates to fill out a survey to share their thoughts. The uni will then use the responses as a part of the decision making process.

In their email, the uni said: “The idea feels fitting and special because as a university we are passionate about sustainability and proud to have a strategy which aims to reduce our overall carbon emissions and find ways to offset them.

“We know the the environment and reducing your carbon footprint is important to you too.

“By planting trees together, we can make a positive contribution to the world around us.”

In 2020 and 2021, in-person graduations were postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions. Virtual ceremonies were held instead and certificates sent by post.
