Mary Christian calls her daughter, Emily Christian, 15, an "old soul." The teen recently added a coat of lilac paint to her bedroom and headed to Southport Antique Mall in search of a vintage lamp.
"We live in a world where we just throw things away," said Emily. Like her daughter, Mary Christian appreciates the quality and nostalgia of vintage treasures. She's part of a growing movement of environmentally conscious shoppers looking at vintage as trendy and cool.
By definition, vintage is anything older than 25 but less than 100.
Antique fainting couches and rustic signs are making way for the "new old," said Piper Voge, a spokeswoman for the Southport Antique Mall, where the second floor is dedicated to apparel like saddle oxfords and polyester formal wear. The shop known as Gypsy Vintage is just one of several new vintage outlets opening up around Central Indiana.
